Clerkenwell Design Week
Industry: Architecture & Design
Type of Work: Visual Identity, Environmental Design
Clerkenwell is home to more creative businesses and architects per square mile than anywhere else on the planet, making it truly one of the most important design hubs in the world.
Having designed the original identity for Clerkenwell Design Week back in 2010 and to see the success it had, I was honoured to be asked to work on the 2025 campaign.
The CDW map has always been a central part of the campaign. As I worked on redrawing the map, I began to notice intriguing patterns emerging from the shapes formed by the road network. I wanted these patterns to reflect the designs, interiors, and products you might encounter while exploring the festival. With that in mind, I incorporated bold colours, geometric shapes, shading, and texture into the map’s design. The map serves as the central visual of the new identity. Its flexibility allows it to be cropped into different sections, making it easy to use as a backdrop behind any messaging. This versatility ensures the map can adapt to various formats while maintaining its connection to the festival’s core design.
Cai created a graphic system that is both bold and incredibly versatile. By drawing on different sections of the Clerkenwell map, the identity allows for variation across assets while maintaining a strong, cohesive look and feel. Its strength and flexibility were so effective that it has been adopted again for next year.
